Postby Thomas » Sun Oct 06, 2013 4:55 am

An OPP officer and a farmer have both been charged in an incident last weekend that saw a police cruiser hit the ditch along Courtright Line in Enniskillen Township.

Last Saturday around 9 pm officers responding to an urgent call came upon a farm vehicle pulling a wagon without rear trailer lights or markers.

The officer took evasive action to avoid hitting the wagon but his cruiser entered the south ditch and rolled over coming to rest on its roof.

The officer and his Auxilliary OPP passenger were treated at hospital for minor injuries and released. The vehicle sustained extensive damage.

Sergeant Dave Rektor calls it a case of two wrongs.

Constable Thomas Vanboven, a six year member of the force is charged with Careless Driving.

Charge Recommended Against OPP Officer

The OPP's Technical Collision Investigation division has recommended a careless driving charge against an officer who rolled his cruiser near Petrolia

(Petrolia) -
There's no word on when Highway Traffic Act charges will be heard, but the Lambton OPP officer that ditched and rolled his cruiser in late September has been written up for careless driving.

West Region Headquarters says the six year police veteran, accompanied by an OPP Auxiliary member were responding to an urgent call when they encountered a farm vehicle towing an unmarked wagon after dusk.

The officer swerved to avoid the trailing unit and the cruiser ended up on its roof in the south ditch off Courtright Line.

Technical Collision Investigation recommended the charge, while the farmer was cited for no light on trailer.

The officer and his assistant had to be cut out of the cruiser, which was badly damaged.

The pair were treated in hospital and released.

A Lambton County OPP constable was charged with careless driving in connection with a Sept. 28 collision in Enniskillen Township.

On that day at about 9 p.m. an OPP officer was responding to an urgent call for service when he came upon a farm vehicle on Courtright Line pulling a wagon without rear trailer lights or markers.

The officer took evasive action to avoid striking the wagon and the fully marked police cruiser went into a ditch and rolled over, coming to rest on its roof.

The officer and his Auxiliary OPP passenger were taken to a local hospital where they were treated and released with minor injuries. The police vehicle sustained extensive damage.

After an investigation by OPP technical collision investigators, the OPP has charged Const. Thomas Vanboven, a six-year member of the OPP, with careless driving.

The other driver was charged with not having a light on the rear of the trailer.
